Bernie on Hillary's Criticism: I Worked Hard to Get Her Elected

(NBC's "Meet the Press")

Sen. Bernie Sanders fired back Sunday at criticism from Hillary Clinton that he didn’t do enough to encourage his supporters to vote for her in 2016, insisting “I worked as hard as I could” to get her elected.

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the Vermont Independent bristled at suggestions in Clinton’s new book, “What Happened,” that Sanders’s supporters may have undermined Clinton’s presidential bid.

“I worked as hard as I could,” he said. “I went all over this country after endorsing Hillary Clinton. And I would remind people. Not everybody who voted for Bernie ended up voting for Hillary.”

“That's what happens in the politics,” he added. “That is the nature of politics. Most people are not rigidly Democrats or Republicans. They vote where they want. I worked as hard as I could to see that Hillary Clinton would be elected president.”

He also criticized the Democrats’ program, saying “the current model of the Democratic Party, obviously, is not working.”

“In my view, what we need to do is reach out to independents,” he said, adding: “I think the Democratic Party has to reach out to working people, reach out to young people… come up with a progressive agenda…”
