Fired U.S. attorney Preet Bharara shot back at President Donald Trump's administration Sunday via Twitter, suggesting he was let go because he might have investigated the president.
The Moreland Commission was created by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., in 2013 to investigate public corruption – only to be disbanded by the governor amid an investigation into campaign finance, spending, and ethics. Some believed the closing of the Moreland Commission was a result of its investigation involving Cuomo.
Those interpreting Bharara's tweet Sunday made the potential connection to a Bharara probe into the president or his administration.
Bharara was among the U.S. attorneys left from President Barack Obama's administration that had been asked to resign by Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Justice Department this week.
When Bharara refused to step down, he was fired Saturday, which he confirmed via Twitter.
Bharara's tweet followed a Sunday tweetstorm by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., slamming President Trump for cleaning house at the Justice Department to fill it with "loyalists" and "a bunch of tame prosecutors who won't investigate him." Warren vowed to lead a fight against Senate confirmation of President Trump's U.S. attorney replacements.
