Vice President Joe Biden has a penchant for shooting from the hip in his public comments, often painting the White House in a negative light. And Republicans will seek to take full advantage of his verbal gaffes during the election campaign.
Just this month, for example, Biden’s unscripted remarks in support of gay marriage forced President Barack Obama to awkwardly adopt the same position.
The Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee have spent weeks parsing Biden’s words and produced video clips of regional interviews in which he came off poorly,
Politico reports. The GOP wants to erase Biden’s appeal to blue-collar voters and doesn’t mind upsetting the White House either.
“The guy’s a ticking time bomb,” a source close to GOP presidential nominee-to-be Mitt Romney told Politico. “Who the hell knows what he’s going to say?” Two GOP sources said that Republicans will continue to spotlight Biden going forward.
To be sure, not everyone thinks attacks on Biden will do the GOP much good, including some Republicans themselves. In a weak economy, he’s not exactly the foremost issue on voters’ minds. It’s really just an issue for the Twitter crowd, one Democrat told Politico. And many Republicans prefer a tight targeting of Obama, rather than diluting the GOP message by focusing on his second in command.
Nonetheless, some Republicans are convinced that going after Biden is a winning strategy. “He is [the] chink in the armor,” one Republican source told Politico. "His verbal snafus help balance out the well-covered gaffes of Romney."
