Bill Bennett: Democrats Too Far Left, Lack Agenda

(Fox News/"Fox & Friends")

Democrats have moved too far to the left, and do not have a clear agenda beyond a wish to bring down President Donald Trump, and matters may not change after their losses in Georgia and South Carolina, former Secretary of Education Bill Bennett said Wednesday.

"There is no straightjacket like an ideological straightjacket," Bennett told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"And they are in one. Look who the leaders of their party are, look who commands the crowds. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren. They are talking about Kamala Harris from California. Now we hear Eric Holder. These are people of the left."

If Democrats continue leaning left and think that is where the country is leaning, they'll lose out, Bennett continued. Instead, the party should take note of people like Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who is "much closer to where the center of the country is."

But he doesn't think that will happen, as "they have moved so far to the left, and they seem committed to it."

Obstructionists are not going to give Trump the chance to get something done," said Bennett, but with the wins in Georgia and South Carolina, that gives time to get some points on the board before the 2018 midterm elections.

Further, Trump is a fighter, the former secretary said.

"The story of the Irishman who walks down the street and sees a fight going on?" Bennett said. "He says 'is this a private fight or can anybody get in?' That's sort of Donald.

"Hey, wait a minute, there is a fight going on. I want in on this fight. My former professor [Alan] Dershowitz is right. He should stay out of these for his own well-being."
