New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio endorsed Rep. Keith Ellison to lead the Democratic National Committee.
His announced support for the Minnesota Democrat came in a column in The Washington Post.
"We need determined leadership that will bring us together as one united party," de Blasio said. "We need an inspiring vision of equality that resonates in the hearts, minds and souls of all Americans.
"We need to renew our commitment to strengthening our grass-roots infrastructure to take on President Trump and the Republicans.
"You'd be hard-pressed to write a better description of Keith Ellison's approach to public service. That's why I'm supporting him in the race to be the next chairman of the Democratic Party."
De Blasio said that it has become clear to him that many Democrats did not vote on Nov. 8 "because they felt the election was more about personalities than the issues…"
But he claimed Democrats are now becoming organized in their opposition to President Donald Trump.
"All over the country, millions of people are getting organized and demonstrating against the president and the broken policies of the Republican Party," he said. "People are starting to feel their power to stop the administration."
He said the party needs someone who can build on that energy and unite Democrats.
"I believe Keith is the leader we need to build a party capable of channeling that power to win up and down the ballot."
De Blasio's endorsement comes as DNC members are scheduled to vote for the next chairman in Atlanta on Saturday.
The Hill noted Ellison, who is in a competitive race with former Labor Secretary Tom Perez and several others, recently received the backing of civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.
