Donald Trump cannot successfully use the steep Obamacare premium hikes to bash Hillary Clinton because "he doesn't know anything about health care," The Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol said Tuesday.
"The message is popular with independents in a normal campaign," Kristol told Don Lemon on CNN. "This would be exactly the message you would use as a Republican candidate.
"A normal candidate could be making it for months," he said of the argument against Obamacare, "but Donald Trump, I don't think he can't."
When Lemon asked why, Kristol replied: "He doesn't know anything about health care and talking about how his employees are not on Obamacare."
In a speech at his resort in Doral, Fla., Trump claimed that "all of my employees are having a tremendous problem with Obamacare" — though telling a reporter afterward that most of his workers were covered through private insurance.
"Some of them," Trump said outside the resort. "Most of them, no."
A Trump spokesman told CNN that "99 percent" of the Doral resort's workers had insurance provided by the company.
Kristol said the gaffe proved that Trump "doesn't know the details of Obamacare and doesn't know what he's proposed as an alternative.
"He says it's going to be so great and easy.
"Where are the details?" he asked. "He can't speak about them."
