Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is now facing mounting scrutiny by the media and his political opponents, according to the New York Post.
It comes as he rises in the polls and emerges as a serious candidate for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
Earlier this week, a recording from a 2015 Bloomberg speech surfaced where he was heard defending “stop and frisk,” the controversial policing procedure. It resulted in President Donald Trump calling him a “total racist” in a tweet that was later deleted.
But the Post noted it is not the only controversy Bloomberg has faced. The newspaper listed others, including:
- Redlining -- The term refers to “red lines” banks would put on a map to identity neighborhoods ineligible for credit, mostly based on race. The newspaper said Bloomberg had referred to the move to get rid of redlining as contributing to the 2008 economic meltdown.
- Atkins Apology -- In 2004, he apologized to the widow of diet Dr. Robert Atkins’s after he told a group of firefighters he believed Atkins was “fat” and implied he thought the doctor died of health-related issues. The newspaper noted Atkins died from massive head trauma caused by a fall on an icy pavement.
- Rich Neighborhoods and Incinerators -- Bloomberg said in 2002 it is not practical to put incinerators in wealthy areas. “If you were to put an incinerator on Park Avenue, you would drive away the revenue base that supports this city,” he said.
