Presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg's campaign is preparing to launch an extensive media blitz against Sen. Bernie Sanders after the Vermont senator's overwhelming win in Nevada, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter.
Senior aides to the Bloomberg campaign have been discussing using some of the millions in resources against Sanders, reports CNBC, quoting sources who declined being named because of the decisions made in private.
The campaign is planning an attack that includes the publication of opposition research, the sources said, as well as digital attack ads that focus on Sanders' record.
The first of the ads on Monday painted Sanders as an ally in the past of the National Rifle Association, coming after the senator accused Bloomberg of trying to use his billions of dollars to buy the Democratic nomination.
Other ads will try to highlight issues with Sanders' records on race relations, coming after Sanders has slammed Bloomberg for supporting stop-and-frisk policing during his three terms as mayor of New York City. The policy often targeted black and Latino people.
The Bloomberg campaign is also discussing whether surrogates and supporters should write opinion pieces and show up on television to speak out against Sanders, according to CNBC's sources.
Bloomberg has not yet taken part in any primaries, choosing to push for wins in the Super Tuesday primaries on March 3. Sanders, meanwhile, has pulled far ahead in state and national polls, while the former mayor was bloodied during his rough first presidential debate.
The Bloomberg campaign itself didn't return a request for comment, but an adviser, Dan Kanninen told reporters Monday that Sanders record on gun safety will be spotlighted.
″[President] Trump himself and now the Russians are indicating that Senator Sanders is the candidate they want to run against,” Kanninen said.
