There are still some "missing pieces" in the House Democrats' impeachment case against President Donald Trump, and that's why witnesses are needed, Sen. Bob Casey said Thursday.

"The only witnesses we are asking for is our four relevant witnesses," the Pennsylvania Democrat told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "They would go under oath as any witness would. They could be subjected and would be subjected to cross-examination."

Democrats want to call former national security adviser John Bolton, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, budget staffer Michael Duffey, and Mulvaney's senior adviser Robert Blair. Casey said that is just one more person that testified in the impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton.

"Not only do they have relevant evidence, but we are in a different process now," said Casey. Meanwhile, when asked if he thinks lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff should be called to testify, Casey said he believes the California Democrat has "made a compelling case. However, Democrats want only "relevant witnesses" about the charges Trump faces, and Chief Justice John Roberts should determine who is relevant.

Casey also said it's important to sort out Trump's conduct now because the nation can't afford to wait for Election Day to decide what to do.

"I think it's very important that the Congress, as the founders and enshrined in the Constitution, have to have a check on the executive branch," Casey said. "If you don't have that check, which is only permitted through impeachment, there is no other way to do this."
