Republicans must go public with their concerns about President Donald Trump, according to Michael Gerson, a former adviser to President George W. Bush.
The challenge with Trump is not to avoid his distractions and focus on priorities: "The real problem has always been Trump's fundamental unfitness for high office," Michael Gerson wrote in a Friday opinion piece in The Washington Post.
Criticism of the president from Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., someone in the president's own party, should give people a reason to call Trump into question, Gerson wrote. "Corker has given public permission to raise the most serious questions… It is no longer possible to safely ignore the leaked cries for help coming from within the administration," Gerson wrote.
The security of the U.S. depends on Trump, Gerson wrote: "It depends on him being some wise, serious, strategic leader he has never been… the American government has a dangerous fragility at its very center."
"The time for whispered criticisms and quiet snickering is over. The time for panic and decision is upon us," Gerson wrote in the Post.
"Any elected Republican who shares Corker's concerns has a political and moral duty to state them in public," Gerson wrote.
"Their silence is deafening and damning," he added.
On Wednesday, Ryan urged Corker and Trump to "talk it out."
