The hoopla over the Trump administration's policy of separating children from the parents of illegal border crossers will make Americans realize "how intellectually dishonest" Democrats are, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said.
Gingrich was on Fox News on Wednesday night to discuss the policy, which will soon come to an end after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to keep families together when they illegally enter the United States.
"He signed an executive order to make sure children are not separated from their parents, and they will now implement that," Gingrich said.
"Congress ought to pass a law, and we already have Sen. Schumer on the Democratic side basically saying he doesn't want to pass a law. He really worries about the children unless it means Donald Trump would win, at which point he doesn't worry about the children because he can't let Trump win.
"I think this will, in the end, remind people how irresponsible and how intellectually dishonest the Democrats have become."
After several days of outcry over the administration's practice of separating families who illegally cross into the U.S. from Mexico, Trump signed a directive to put an end to housing children in detention centers and processing adults in a separate area for criminals. What will not change, however, is the zero tolerance approach toward illegal border crossing.
Gingrich was then asked how the issue could impact the November midterm elections, as Democrats are banging the war drums to rally support for their own candidates.
"The president was totally right [Wednesday] to issue the executive order," he said. "I think by the end of the year, it will probably end up being a wash. At some point, people also have to recognize how much of this is a coldhearted calculation by Schumer and the Democrats."
