Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called for the Trump administration to rescind its family separation policy for those caught crossing the border illegally, saying it is "an affront to the decency of the American people."

McCain's demand adds to the growing bipartisan criticism of the zero-tolerance policy that has led to the separation of children from their parents at the border.

Also on Monday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, also called for an end to the controversial policy.

"While I have said that this is a policy discussion that needs to be had, in my view, we should not have a policy designed to separate families, particularly mothers with young children, without a clear process and focus on the needs of the children," her statement declared.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, defended the family separation policy — and called on Congress to change laws that force the controversial policy.

"Parents who entered illegally are, by definition, criminals," Nielsen said. "Here is the bottom line: DHS is no longer ignoring the law."
