Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., are set to offer President Donald Trump $1.3 billion in funding for the border wall, well short of the $5 billion Trump seeks, as a spending bill looms, The Washington Post reports.

If they cannot come to an agreement, the government could shut down Dec. 22, days before Christmas.

Sen. Schumer and Rep. Pelosi will sit with Trump Tuesday morning at the White House to discuss the deal.

Both sides have dug in on their demands over border funding, with Schumer last week warning a "Trump temper tantrum" will be the cause of a shutdown.

"If President Trump wants to throw a temper tantrum and shut down the government over Christmas over the wall, that's his decision," Schumer said.

Democrats have stipulated the border money can only be used for fencing, but Republicans are saying Trump would veto such a bill.

"I don't think that's acceptable," Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican told the Post. "I can't imagine the president would accept that."

Trump last Friday said the wall would pay for itself in a single month.

"We're talking about a wall for 20 billion, 15 billion," the president claimed in a Kansas City speech to law enforcement. "I could even do it cheaper if I have to, and it'll be better than anybody's ever seen a wall. Think of that. You're talking about hundreds of billions of dollars, and you're talking about a fraction. You'd make it up in a month – a month! – by having a proper wall."
