Mississippi District Attorney for DeSoto County Matthew Barton, the man backing a new law to pay bounty hunters a $1,000 reward to assist in the deportation of illegal aliens, described to Newsmax on Monday that the proposal is "Crime Stoppers on steroids."
"So basically, think of it like Crime Stoppers on steroids," Barton told "Rob Schmitt Tonight," "where you have a tip line where someone with, you know, worthwhile information can pass that along to law enforcement."
"It will be vetted just like any other tip and any other crime category. If that information proves worthwhile, then authorities can authorize the detention of a certain individual, and bounty hunters that are licensed with the state, as well as peace officers, would be eligible to assist ICE in making these initial detainments and hold them until the federal government shows up to take over."
The law in question, House Bill 1484, proposed by GOP state Rep. Justin Keen, aims to establish an "Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program," according to Newsweek.
"We've seen firsthand the danger posed by bad actors and violent criminals who enter this country illegally, like the innocent life of Laken Riley," Keen said. "President Trump's administration has made it clear that deporting illegal immigrants is a priority, and we are proud to do our part here in Mississippi to help support his agenda and protect our citizens."
