House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff tried to tell the American people a different conversation between President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, a committee member, said after Thursday's hearing with acting Director of National Intelligence Director Joseph Maguire.
"He made this to fit his narrative,"Wenstrup told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime." "We have the transcript. That's not what was said at all. You have both of the members, the president, and the Ukraine president, saying that's not what was said. Yet, he puts it out there, and most of the media will run with that."
Wenstrup said, while the conversation between the two leaders has been construed as Trump pushing Zelenskiy to investigate the activities of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, Wenstrup said he sees it came across as if they were trying to condemn corruption in their countries.
Wenstrup said he also thought Democrats on his committee were trying to demean Maguire, as they "think that works for them."
"We've seen this movie before," Wenstrup said. "You can take someone of integrity and tear them down. They've had some luck with that in the media, even though they were false narratives."
Meanwhile, if Schiff is able to bring in the whistleblower behind the report on the telephone call, Wenstrup said he hopes that person will testify publicly, not behind closed doors.
"At the end of the day, they can come out and say whatever they want as opposed to what America may actually get to hear," Wenstrup said.
