The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is increasing its primary season spending in California as the party makes a push to take back control of the House.

According to The Hill, the DCCC has now spent almost $1.4 million on advertising in the Golden State to boost its primary candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. At this point, the TV and radio ad spending is focused on attacking Republican candidates.

Included on the spending list is the race to replace the retiring Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican. The DCCC, according to The Hill, has spent $410,500 on broadcast and $113,900 on cable advertising in the race. Those ads will start to air Tuesday, three weeks before the state's primaries.

The DCCC has also spent significant chunks of money to defeat Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher ($407,000 on cable, $168,700 on radio) and the retiring Republican Rep. Ed Royce ($234,000 on cable, $40,000 on radio).

The spending effort is likely part of the Democratic Party's strategy to target House races in districts won by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

Some Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, are anxious about the midterms and the prospect the party could lose control of one or both chambers on Capitol Hill.
