This weekend's summit with President Donald Trump and several Republican lawmakers at Camp David will focus on forming bipartisan plans to work with Democrats, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said Friday.
The Texas Republican told Fox News the president this week talked about issues such as immigration and infrastructure and how Republicans can join forces with Democrats to put together and pass strong legislation.
"The president said yesterday at our meeting we needed to have a bipartisan meeting, which he has scheduled for Tuesday morning, to get [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer and [Sen.] Dick Durbin in the room and to begin to compare proposals and to try to meet in the middle somewhere," Cornyn said.
"But the president also has made clear he wants to deal with chain migration and he wants to deal with the diversity lottery visa. Those are things that he has insisted upon."
Later in the interview, Cornyn said an infrastructure plan is another topic that will likely be on the docket during the high-level meeting this weekend in the mountains of Maryland.
"Obviously, the biggest challenge we have is now in the senate. We have 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats. There is no way of getting things done this year without bipartisan support," he said. "But I think there are clearly some areas where we can work together. I heard a discussion of infrastructure, which I suspect will be one of the items front and center at Camp David."
