The Trump campaign is seeking to load up on debates between President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, tapping Rudy Giuliani to lead the effort, Politico reported.
Trump had threatened to boycott debates this coming fall, claiming biased media outlets only support Democrats and Biden, but Giuliani will be tasked with helping select the moderators for as many as four debates, per the report.
"The problem is that the so-called Commission on Presidential Debates is stacked with Trump Haters & Never Trumpers," Trump tweeted last year.
The Trump campaign hopes to capitalize on Biden's uneven performances in past debates and frequent missteps speaking in the media this winter and spring. Also, adding debates is a concerted effort to expose issues with Biden's stamina. Biden, whom Trump has nicknamed "Sleepy Joe," will turn 78 years old shortly after the election. Trump just turned 74.
Giuliani, who is an unpaid adviser to the campaign, held a conference call with Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chairman of the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, seeking for debates to begin before early voting and adding a fourth debate, Politico reported.
Three presidential debates are scheduled to date, including Sept. 29 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Oct. 15 at the University of Michigan, and Oct. 22 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Also, the vice presidential debate will be Oct. 7 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
The Trump campaign, seeking to maximize viewership, also requested the Oct. 15 and 22 debates to be moved because it would compete with a Thursday night NFL broadcast.
