Conservative political commentator and author Candace Owens is ripping into Barack Obama, saying the former president's claim that President Donald Trump's rise to power was the product of racism is "absolutely despicable."
Owens made her remarks during a Thursday interview on the Fox News show "Hannity."
They came after CNN obtained a copy of the ex-president's memoir, "A Promised Land," set for release on Nov. 17.
Obama writes in the book: "For millions of Americans spooked by a Black man in the White House, he [Trump] promised an elixir for their racial anxiety."
But Owens disputed the claim.
"Let me just say that the language that he's using, the rhetoric that's coming out of Barack Obama's mouth is nothing short of absolutely despicable in my opinion," she said.
"Barack Obama became the president of the United States because white Americans supported him. And rather than show some unity, rather than show some respect for this country that gave him literally everything he has, he turns his back ... and says, 'Look at this despicable country. It's broken.'
"He is the first president that has ever sat in the White House and come out ... hating America."
And she noted Trump's support among Black Americans continued to improve during his presidency.
"Do you think that [Democrats] could have the humility to pause for a second and say, 'You know what? Maybe it's not because every single person in America is a racist,'" she said. "People are standing behind Donald J. Trump because he is an effective and good leader who tells the truth and doesn't ... run on identity politics."
