Joe Biden's faith will be on public display, set to become the first churchgoing president in decades and just the second Catholic president in American history.

"For Joe, faith is both a private devotion – he prays regularly, he goes to church – but it's also public," Fr. Kevin O'Brien, a spiritual adviser to Jill and Joe Biden, told CNN. "He's open about and proud that he's a Catholic."

Biden regularly attends Sunday Mass and it is expected he will continue that practice if he takes over the White House.

"Joe's faith isn't just part of who he is," Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told CNN. "It's foundational to who he is."

John F. Kennedy was the other Catholic president, which raised questions about whether the Vatican might usher some influence over the White House, if not American politics, according to CNN.

That is no longer a fear today, but Biden's pro-choice stance worries some conservative Catholics as the U.S. president might influence the religion.

"It just sort of highlights even more where he is at odds with the church," Catholic Association senior fellow Ashley McGuire told CNN.
