Political columnist Charles Krauthammer criticized President Donald Trump's move to fire FBI Director James Comey and called the move "inexplicable," The Hill reported.

Comey was fired by President Donald Trump on Tuesday for his handling of the agency's investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, according to The Washington Post, stunning news, considering Trump benefitted from the Clinton investigation during the campaign.

"Here's what so odd about it. This is about, according to the deputy attorney general, something that occurred on July the 5th," Krauthammer said on Fox News' "Special Report," referring to Comey's recommendation Clinton not be indicted for her use of a private server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

"So, we start out with something that is highly implausible. If that was so offensive to the Trump administration, which you would have done during the transition is you would have spoken to Comey and said, 'We're going to let you go,'" he continued. "That is when a president could very easily make a decision to have a change that's not unprecedented.

"To fire him summarily in the middle of May for something that happened in July is inexplicable."

Comey's firing comes amid the FBI's investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the election.
