New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is being officially vetted, but is not expected to be named Donald Trump's running mate on the GOP presidential ticket, NJ.com reports, citing unnamed sources close to the process.

"The people who've been pushing the Christie narrative are Christie people," said one source, who told the website that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is the most likely choice. The person added, however, the decision will be up to Trump. "I doubt anyone really fully knows what he's going to do."

Gingrich himself admitted Thursday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" that he is being vetted along with four of five others.

Christie has been asked to fill out disclosure documents, the source said, but added, "They've been vetting him (because) it would be embarrassing not to be vetted."

Christie was, after all, the first of Trump's vanquished foes to back him and is head of his transition planning team.

Others still thought to be on Trump's short list include Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.
