Christie: I Won't Appoint Myself to Replace Menendez

Fox News Channel's "Your World With Neil Cavuto"

Don't expect New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to appoint himself to replace Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez if Menendez ends up resigning following his upcoming corruption trial.

"I don't see that happening," Christie said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World With Neil Cavuto."

"I really do believe that some of us are built for executive positions and some of us are built for legislative positions," Christie said. "I think I'm much more of an executive branch kind of guy."

Still, Christie did not rule out a job in President Donald Trump's administration once his second term as governor is up.

"Once I leave office, we'll see what's going to come next," he said. "My wife would like me to reach my financial potential. I don't know whether she thinks going to Washington would be the best thing in the world for that with two more kids to put through college."

Still, Christie said, he "will always be there to help" the president. "Whether that will be as a formal role in the administration, only time will tell."

Christie serves as head of Trump's commission on opioid abuse, but has been passed over for other jobs in the administration.

Menendez's trial is set to begin Sept. 6.
