"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace drilled down on a Democratic senator over remarks that smacked of "McCarthyism" concerning conversations between Russia and the Trump campaign.
In the Sunday news program, Wallace pressed Delaware Democratic Sen. Chris Coons about his remarks to MSBNC last Friday.
In the earlier interview, Coons referenced "transcripts that provide very helpful, very critical insights" and that he believes "they exist."
"Senator, we’re talking here about the president of the United States," Wallace told Coons about his remarks.
"Isn’t there more than a whiff of McCarthyism for you as a U.S. Senator to say there are transcripts out there that provide insight into whether or not there was collusion, but you don’t know whether or not they exist?" Wallace asked.
"To the extent of those comments, they might be some way misinterpreted as leading to sort of a hyperventilating attitude here in the Senate about this, I apologize for that," Coons replied. "That's not what I was trying to do."
"What I was trying to do, and I think it's important, is to draw the American people to what joins us in common, which is the need for us to get to the bottom of this, to get access to what intelligence there is.'
Wallace also pressed Coons about whether he knew of any hard evidence that there was collusion between the Russians and Trump campaign — or if a protracted investigation wasn't just an attempt to "derail' President Donald Trump's agenda.
Coons replied his goal "is to make sure that we defend our democracy," adding: "It's outrageous to suggest that we shouldn't investigate thoroughly and fully what are credible allegations of Russian interference in our election."
