Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Monday that it was difficult to decide what direction President Donald Trump is planning, because often when Trump or his associates issue "very strong statements," they walk them back quickly afterward.
"This is typical of a pattern we have seen with President Trump, where he initially makes very strong statements — recently about his commitment to gun control, his commitment to immigration reform — and then within a day or two, either a spokesperson walks it back, or he issues a retraction. It's hard to know exactly what direction the president is taking," Coons said Monday on CNN's "New Day."
Coons said that both parties should express their opposition to Mueller being fired. "I think this is a time when all of us, Republicans and Democrats, need to stand up and make it clear that we're committed to the rule of law, and for the president or his lawyer, to even in jest talk about firing Mueller or ending his investigation is unacceptable," Coons said.
Two bills in the Senate would prevent a special counsel being fired. "After the statements by the president on Twitter this weekend, I think every Republican senator should be on one of these two bills," he said.
Over the weekend, Trump said on Twitter that the Mueller probe should never have been started.
Trump lawyer John Dowd said Saturday that he hoped deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein would shut down the Mueller probe, The Daily Beast reported. Dowd later said he was speaking personally, not on behalf of Trump.
