Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Thursday that Donald Trump Jr. and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort would be subpoenaed if they did not appear before his panel next week.
"We sent the letter," the Iowa Republican told CNN at the Capitol. "I don't know whether they've accepted, but we sent the letter.
"We asked them for a voluntary appearance," he added. "At least publicly, I indicated to them that there will be a subpoena if they don't come."
Trump Jr. and Manafort are scheduled to testify before the Judiciary Committee on July 26, according to a schedule of the hearing posted on Wednesday, but they have not yet confirmed whether they would appear.
The hearing concerns oversight issues relating to foreign agents serving as lobbyists for foreign entities.
The Judiciary Committee is one of several congressional panels probing possible Trump campaign ties to Russia.
"We are having a hearing next Wednesday, so obviously we want to hear right away so we can get the subpoena," Grassley told CNN.
"I hope they accept the subpoena voluntarily, but if they don't then you have to have a marshal give it — and that takes a little more time."
In June 2016, Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer in a session he arranged under the guise of obtaining damaging information about Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Manafort and Jared Kushner, Trump Jr.'s brother-in-law and now a senior White House adviser, also attended the Trump Tower meeting.
