New York Sen. Chuck Schumer Wednesday called on Florida Rep. Alan Grayson to drop out of the Senate race in the Sunshine State amid allegations of domestic abuse by his former wife and a dust-up Tuesday with a reporter at the Democratic National Convention.

Grayson has "shown himself not to be worthy of being a U.S. senator," Schumer, who is expected to succeed outgoing Minority Leader Harry Reid next year, told Politico in an interview.

"I’ve never thought much about Grayson as a candidate, that’s why we backed Patrick Murphy," he said. "And now it’s of course much, much worse.

"He ought to do the right thing and drop out."

On Tuesday, Grayson, 58, threatened to have Politico reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere arrested after accusing him of assault as the journalist questioned him about allegations by his former wife dating back to 1994.

Politico posted a video of the altercation between Grayson and Dovere. The website reported the accusations on Tuesday based on documents provided by Grayson's former wife.

The congressman, who was first elected in 2008, has denied the domestic allegations.
