Schumer Lauds McCain for Healthcare Opposition

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday lauded Sen. John McCain's opposition to the latest Republican plan to end Obamacare, saying that bipartisan talks would continue "as soon as repeal is off the table."

"John McCain shows the same courage in Congress that he showed when he was a naval aviator," the New York Democrat said in a statement. "I have assured Sen. McCain that as soon as repeal is off the table, we Democrats are intent on resuming the bipartisan process."

McCain said Friday that he would oppose the bill, co-sponsored by Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.

"I cannot in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal," McCain said in a statement posted on Twitter. "I believe we could do better working together."

But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was more defiant in her response, vowing on Twitter that fellow Democrats would keep working "to put the stake in the heart of this monstrous bill."
