Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday warned of a “constitutional crisis” if the firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions serves as “a prelude” to ending special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
At a news conference about the midterm elections, the New York Democrat was interrupted with news of the Sessions resignation — and promptly exclaimed, “Oh.”
“I just got the news,” he told reporters at the press conference.
“But I will say this: Protecting Mueller and his investigation is paramount.”
“It would create a constitutiontal crisis if this were a prelude to ending or limiting the Mueller investigation,” he continued. “And I hope that President [Donald] Trump and those he listens to should refrain from that.”
Sessions was hit for more than a year with harsh public criticism from Trump over his recusal from the probe by Mueller into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.
