Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has told the White House he is taking back his offer give President Donald Trump more than $1.6 billion in border wall funding, Politico reported Tuesday.
Two Democrats told Politico a Schumer aide told the White House on Monday that the border wall funding pledge was off the table.
"He called the White House yesterday and said it's over," Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, told Politico.
Schumer offered a large increase in border wall spending as a condition for a broader deal to help Dreamers, children brought here illegally and protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
That offer reportedly came at last week's so-called "cheeseburger summit" between the President and Schumer. The White House rejected that deal, leading to a three-day government shutdown.
One Democratic aide told Politico Trump "missed an opportunity to get the wall" by refusing Schumer's plan.
Democrats are pressing for a "clean" DACA bill, but Republicans are unlikely to pass any legislation that doesn't include money for border security, including a wall.
Immigration hard-liner Tom Cotton, R-Ark., accused Democrats of falsely claiming that Schumer and Trump had made some sort of deal.
"They claim that some crazy deal was made," Cotton told Politico. "And then when we say no deal was made, they accuse Republicans and the President of reneging."
