President Donald Trump's latest White House controversy, claiming former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, is a Catch-22 of "trouble," the leader of the Democratic opposition party told the New York Post on Sunday.
"Either way . . . the president's in trouble," Sen. Chuck Schumer, R-N.Y., told the Post. "If he falsely spread this kind of misinformation, that is so wrong.
"It's beneath the dignity of the presidency. It is something that really hurts people's view of government."
But, even if President Trump's tweeted wiretap claim is true, it means the Obama administration had just cause to look into Trump and his campaign's ties to Russia, Schumer added.
"On the other hand, if it's true, it's even worse for the president," Schumer told the Post. "Because that means that a federal judge, independently elected, has found probable cause that the president, or people on his staff, have probable cause to have broken the law or to have interacted with a foreign agent."
Schumer told the Post a special, independent prosecutor needs to investigate the matter because the partisanship in Congress is too biased.
The whole matter "shows this president doesn't know how to conduct himself," Schumer told the Post.
