President Donald Trump allegedly dismissing Russian election meddling efforts as fair game because the U.S. does it, too, is "one of the most disturbing things we've learned yet," according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
The rebuke came via Twitter on Saturday:
"If true, the reports that President @realDonaldTrump may have told close associates of Putin that he didn't mind Russian interference in the U.S. elections are extremely harmful to both our national security and the integrity of our elections."
Schumer was pointing to a classified 2017 Oval Office meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and then-Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, of which Schumer seeks "all the records."
"It's one of the most disturbing things we've learned yet," Schumer wrote in an ensuing tweet. "The White House should immediately provide the Congressional intelligence committees with all the records of that meeting so we can get to the bottom of it."
Schumer then pressed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to work to push forward the House Democrats' legislative agenda in the GOP-controlled Senate:
"Since President @realDonaldTrump does not seem to care about the integrity of our elections, it's incumbent upon the Congress to take action. @SenateMajLdr Mitch McConnell: Stop blocking desperately-needed election security legislation in the Senate."
