Former CIA Director John Brennan slammed President Donald Trump Saturday as a "disgraced demagogue" over the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe just two days before he would have become eligible for retirement.

"When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history," Brennan tweeted to Trump, while responding to a message the president posted just after midnight.

"You may scapegoat Andy McCabe, but you will  not destroy America...America will triumph over you," Brennan, who served under former President Barack Obama added.

McCabe was fired over the FBI's handling of the 2016 investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump accused both McCabe and former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired shortly after Trump took office.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in a statement made about the decision, said that the FBI expects all employees to "adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability."

The Justice Department said an internal investigation found McCabe had made unauthorized disclosures to the media, and was not honest "on multiple occasions" with the the DOJ's inspector general.

McCabe says he is the victim of a "war" the Trump administration has staged against the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election meddling.

"I am being singled out and treated this way because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey," McCabe said.

Trump, though, says McCabe and Comey protected Clinton from being prosecuted for her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, and about over the actions of the private Clinton Foundation.

Saturday was not the first time Brennan has attacked Trump. Earlier this month, the former CIA director told MSNBC that the president is "unstable, inept, inexperienced, and unethical," and warned that he is not able to handle international issues like the threat posed to the U.S. by Russia's President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's nuclear missile program.
