Sen. Claire McCaskill has issued a stark warning to Hillary Clinton, advising her to be "more careful" about the way she talks about Americans who supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race.

"For those of us that are in states that Trump won, we would really appreciate if she would be more careful and show respect to every American voter and not just the ones who voted for her," McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, said Sunday on MSNBC.

Earlier this month, Clinton, the former first lady who lost to Trump, said she had "won the places that represent two-thirds of America's gross domestic product. I won the places that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward."

She added that Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign "was looking backwards," telling his supporters, 'You didn't like black people getting rights, you don't like women, you know, getting jobs.

"'You don't want, you know, to see that Indian-American succeeding more than you are. Whatever your problem is ... working for a woman now, you don't like it.' Whatever the reason was, he stirred that up."

Clinton later apologized, saying she "meant no disrespect."

McCaskill told MSNBC: "I understand the point she was trying to make, but it felt like she was criticizing Missouri voters. I would draw a line there. I have great respect for Missouri voters, and there were a lot of reasons why they voted for Donald Trump, some of them I understand."
