It's not a question of if, but rather when another round of leaked Democratic documents will flood the election news cycle that has Hillary Clinton's campaign on edge.

NBC News
reports waves of officials within the campaign and party are trying to get a foothold on what exactly was leaked in the nearly 20,000 emails last week, and whether there is more and how damaging it could be.

"That is a nightmare scenario, and let's hope we don't see that as an October Surprise emails from Hillary Clinton's server that have either been in the press or worse, the classified ones that no one in the public has seen," retired Admiral James Stavridis told NBC News.

Cybersecurity specialists are certain the Russian intelligence community is behind the hacking, but it's the "what more" and "why" that has officials scrambling.

Wikileaks has promised to leak more documents in an effort to damage Clinton.

As for why, one expert told NBC News that the infiltration is most likely about weak-legging the American political process.

"It's much more nuanced than just influencing the election; it's more about putting a spotlight on the United States' failings and damaging the credibility of our political system and our political elites," Fiona Hill, author and former officer of the National Intelligence Council, told NBC News.
