Donald Trump will be sworn in Friday with an approval rating of only 40 percent — the lowest of any recent president, a new CNN/ORC poll reveals.

Here are the survey highlights:

  • Trump received a 40-52 percent approval rating of his presidential transition in the days leading up to his inauguration
  • President Barack Obama had received an 84-14 percent approval rating right before his 2009 inauguration.
  • President George W. Bush had recorded a 61-25 percent approval rating going into his 2001 inaugural.
  • Bill Clinton had received a 67-15 approval rating leading up to his 1993 inauguration.
  • 48 percent say Trump would be a very good or fairly good president, while another 48 percent said he would be fairly poor or very poor.

"Trump's wobbly handling of the presidential transition has left most Americans with growing doubts that the president-elect will be able to handle the job," CNN wrote.

The poll also found:

  • 37 percent say Trump's statements and actions have made them more confident in his ability, while 53 percent say it all has made them less confident.
  • 44-33 percent have a favorable view of Trump's daughter, Ivanka, compared to 36-35 percent having a favorable impression of his wife Melania.
  • 40-37 percent have a favorable view of Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

The CNN/ORC Poll was conducted by telephone Jan. 12-15 among a random national sample of 1,000 adults.

The results closely mirror a Gallup poll which also found Trump had a 40 percent favorability rating — far below those of his predecessors.
