Republican election officials in Colorado are shooting back at Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who claims that "voter suppression" led to the defeat of two Democratic state senators in recall elections Tuesday.

It is widely accepted that the Democrats lost because of their support for stringent gun control measures.

"Wasserman Schultz and the DNC have no credibility whatsoever on this — none," Scott Gessler, Colorado's Republican secretary of state, told Politico.

"When you look at the results of this recall election, when more people showed up, Democrats got crushed ... She says stuff that's just completely contradicted by facts on the ground."

Wasserman Schultz made her allegations in a statement Wednesday. "This was voter suppression, pure and simple," she said. "The recall elections in Colorado were defined by the vast array of obstacles that special interests threw in the way of voters for the purpose of reversing the will of the legislature and the people."

Gessler’s spokesman Andrew Cole said it was a Democratic county clerk who challenged orders from the secretary of state's office that would have allowed email requests for ballots until Election Day and would have allowed an eight-day extension for snail-mail ballots to be received, according to The Hill.

"You have a Democrat county clerk challenging our rules and orders and winning in court, so I don’t see how [Wasserman Schultz] could say that there’s voter suppression," Cole said.
