Comer, Jordan: Hunter Contempt Charge Ahead Despite About-Face

By    |   Friday, 12 January 2024 06:41 PM EST

The Republican chairmen of two of the House committees investigating Hunter Biden said Friday that the contempt of Congress resolution will proceed against the first son despite his about-face on sitting for a deposition.

Further, Oversight Chair James Comer, R-Ky., and Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, released a joint statement Friday warning Hunter Biden against "additional stunts or delay."

Their statement came after attorney Abbe Lowell said earlier Friday that Hunter Biden will appear for a closed-door deposition after the panels "issue a new proper subpoena." It's Lowell's contention that the previous subpoenas were "legally invalid," rendering the contempt resolution "impermissible."

In their statement, Comer and Jordan said the House "will move forward with holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress until such time that Hunter Biden confirms a date to appear for a private deposition in accordance with his legal obligation."

The two committees voted Wednesday to hold Biden in contempt, a hearing he attended for just under an hour. The full House will vote next week on whether to hold Hunter Biden in contempt.

Comer and Jordan said the House "will not provide special treatment for the Biden family."

"While we are heartened that Hunter Biden now says he will comply with a subpoena, make no mistake: Hunter Biden has already defied two valid, lawful subpoenas. Instead of appearing for his deposition on December 13, 2023, Hunter Biden appeared on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol where he made a public statement without taking any questions."

"Then this week at the Oversight Committee's markup of his contempt resolution, Hunter Biden pulled another stunt as he continued to defy duly issued subpoenas," Comer and Jordan added.

"While we will work to schedule a deposition date, we will not tolerate any additional stunts or delay from Hunter Biden. The American people will not tolerate, and the House will not provide, special treatment for the Biden family," they concluded.

The committees are investigating Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden amid a larger probe into what they say is a massive influence peddling scheme that President Joe Biden has profited from.
