Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey is a favorite of Hillary Clinton supporters to be her choice as vice president.
Booker could be a valuable ally for Clinton, according to supporters in a report by
The Hill. Clinton has been criticized for appearing too stiff, while Booker has been said to appear open and relatable.
Booker has a frequent presence on social media, including such posts as comedic sing-along videos, which endear him to young voters. He has 1.6 million Twitter followers,
Booker achieved national attention when he was the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, before he became a senator.
The Daily Beast collected a list of Booker’s actions, including rescuing a dog stuck outside in freezing weather, hosting residents at his home when they were without power after a storm, and rescuing his neighbor from a burning house.
Patrick Murray of the Monmouth University Polling Institute said Booker meets a need that Clinton has, with an ability to appeal to young voters that have been learning toward Bernie Sanders.
"We ultimately need young voters to turn out like they did in 2008 and 2012," Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, of Connecticut, said in the Hill report.
"He’s got to be out there in a big way come the fall," Murphy said.
Booker endorsed Clinton in June 2015.
The New York Times reported that Booker is on Clinton’s short list for vice president choices.
Booker also has shown an interest in "common-sense changes" that appeal to young voters. In one case, Booker wrote an editorial in
The Guardian about his opposition to solitary confinement for juveniles.
One Clinton aide told The Hill, "We love Sen. Booker."
