Conservatives love President Donald Trump, but not his tweeting, and only 21 percent of attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland say Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been fair in his Russia probe, according to a CPAC-Washington Times poll released Saturday.
Trump scored a 93 percent approval rating, and 79 percent of attendees said GOP congressional leaders should be doing more to back the president. Just 35 percent said Trump should turn up the tweeting, while 40 percent said they wished he would tweet less.
The conference hosted a large slate of high-profile speakers, including Trump, who called to eliminate “gun-free zones” at schools and the nation’s military bases. The president’s speech came the same day former campaign official Rick Gates pleaded guilty to two criminal charges in Mueller’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Mueller also filed new charges Friday against Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman who pleaded not guilty to charges in October of money laundering and failing to register as an agent in the U.S. for political consulting they did for Ukraine and pro-Russian leaders.
Prosecutors say Manafort, with Gates’ assistance, "secretly retained a group of former senior European politicians to take positions favorable to Ukraine, including by lobbying in the United States."
