Poll: Ted Cruz Has Very Slim Lead Over Dem Challenger

Forty-seven percent of Texas voters support Republican incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz and 44 percent back his Democratic challenger, Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a new Quinnipiac University Poll reveals.

The poll has the race too close to call with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 88 percent of Republicans back Cruz; 9 percent of Democrats and 37 percent of independents.
  • 6 percent of Republicans favor O'Rourke; 87 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of independents.
  • 46 percent have a favorable opinion of Cruz; 44 percent have an unfavorable view and 10 percent haven't heard enough about him.
  • 30 percent have a favorable view of O'Rourke; 16 percent have an unfavorable opinion and 53 percent haven't heard enough about him.

The poll, conducted April 12-17, surveyed 1,029 Texas voters.
