Poll: Most Americans Support Trump's Conditions for DACA Deal

Poll: Most Americans Support Trump's Conditions for DACA Deal

Although Americans strongly back granting citizenship rights to illegal immigrant Dreamers, a majority also supports President Donald Trump’s three conditions for such a deal - a border wall, limits to the chain of family migration and an end to the diversity visa lottery, according to a new Harvard-Harris poll.

However, despite agreeing with the president’s line of thinking, 56 percent disapprove of Trump’s overall handling of the immigration issue, while only 44 percent approve, according to The Washington Examiner:

Details from the survey include:

  • 65 percent of voters support a deal that gives undocumented immigrants brought here by their parents work permits and a path to citizenship in return for increasing merit preference over preference for relatives, eliminating the diversity visa lottery, and funding barrier security on the Mexico border. Thirty-five percent oppose such an arrangement.
  • 60 percent of voters said that children who were brought into the U.S. illegally by their parents should not be given preference for their parents and relatives to move to this country.
  • 79 percent of voters said immigration priority for those coming to the U.S. should be based on an individual’s ability to contribute to America according to their education and skills, and not based on a person having relatives in the U.S.
  • 68 percent of voters oppose the lottery that randomly chooses 50,000 people to enter the country each year for greater diversity.
  • 61 percent of voters believe current border security is inadequate.
  • Among Hispanic voters, 72 percent said immigration policy "should be based on a person’s ability to contribute to America as measured by their education and skills," rather than “based on a person having relatives in the United States," while just 28 percent said immigration should be family-based. The poll also found that 81 percent of Hispanic voters say they prefer a secure border over “basically open borders," according to The Daily Caller.

This survey was conducted online within the United States between January 17-19 among 980 registered voters by The Harris Poll. The results reflect a nationally representative sample.
