Former Vice President Dan Quayle met with Donald Trump on Tuesday, telling reporters only that he "stopped by to see the president-elect to offer personal congratulations to him."

"I was in the area," Quayle, 69, said in the lobby of Trump Tower after meeting with the president-elect. "I had talked to him recently on the phone.

"He's going to make America great again," he said. "We're in good hands."

Quayle served under President George H.W. Bush. He represented Indiana in the Senate from 1981 to 1989 and in the House from 1977 to 1981.

The former vice president has praised Trump for selecting Mike Pence as his running mate, telling Politico in July that the Indiana governor was a "great pick."

"It gave a lot of comfort to Republicans, independents and some disenchanted Democrats," Quayle said. "It's a great choice for Donald Trump — and hopefully they're on the road to victory."

In May, Quayle said he would back Trump's presidential campaign.
