The Senate GOP healthcare bill will make it through, but postponing it may make senators a bit hesitant to vote for it as days go by, Citizens United President David Bossie, a former deputy campaign manager for President Donald Trump, said Monday.
"It's going to be very difficult over the next week while we wait for Sen. John McCain, because when senators are sitting around watching television and watching the coverage, they get a little 'hinky,' as they say here, and I think I prefer a vote today or tomorrow as opposed to the end of this week or next," Bossie told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
On Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called for a delay on the bill's vote, after McCain underwent unexpected surgery in Arizona for a blood clot above his left eye. The Arizona Republican will remain at home this week recovering from the surgery, leaving McConnell at least one vote shy of the 50 he needs to advance the healthcare measure.
"While John is recovering, the Senate will continue our work on legislative items and nominations, and will defer consideration of the Better Care Act," McConnell said in a statement late Saturday.
The Congressional Budget Office is also expected to issue its estimate of the revised plans impact on health coverage. The report had been anticipated for Monday, but has been pushed back after the vote was delayed.
"First of all, my thoughts and prayers are with Sen. McCain this morning," said Bossie. "It is a serious, serious thing that he's going through, and I hope that he does well in his recovery. You know, he's one of the last of a generation; right? A true war hero. I have not agreed with him on a lot of things in the Senate over the years, but he's a true American hero for a lot of people. So I wish him well."
Meanwhile, there are still several Republicans not onboard for the vote, and Bossie said the president is letting the process "work the way that it's supposed to work."
