Republican Sen. David Perdue said that voters want Donald Trump as president, and Republicans must listen and get behind the candidate.
"It is time to let Trump be Trump, and help him win this election," the first-term Georgia senator wrote
in the Washington Post.
In his piece, he pointed out that some in the party do not appear to understand the appeal Trump has with voters, writing, "These DC insiders are so caught up in the Washington bubble that they failed to realize the world around them has changed."
Trump has tapped into voters' lack of satisfaction with Washington, he continued, using "straight, unapologetic criticism of the powers-that-be."
He also cited similarities between Trump's candidacy and Perdue's own election to the Georgia Senate — he recounted that the political establishment said that voting for him was a risk and that he "wasn't Republican enough."
Perdue pointed out that he, like Trump, ran companies and created jobs throughout his career, unlike career politicians. Perdue is the only Fortune 500 CEO in Congress, according to his bio in his Post article, and was the former CEO of Reebok and Dollar General.
"Fortunately for our party, Trump is a nominee unlike anything we have ever seen," he wrote of the political outsider.
Perdue asked Republicans to recognize Trump's ability to get the party to the White House, and that they cannot allow their opponents to control the Supreme Court "for a generation."
"Stop agonizing for a minute, take a deep breath, and at least contemplate the value of having such a unique asset at the top of our ticket," he wrote.
