Amid President Donald Trump's weekend call for reporter David Weigel to be fired from The Washington Post over a tweet, the national political correspondent filed a story Sunday reminding him three Democratic senators have suggested the president should resign.
Citing Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., who announced plans this week to resign amid sexual harassment allegations, Weigel's report cobbled together calls by Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., for there to be renewed looks at the sexual misconduct allegations against President Trump, which came to light during the campaign in October 2016.
Sanders' reiterated his tweet on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, which comes after Merkley appeared during the weekday version of the show.
"The president should resign because he certainly has a track record with more than 17 women of horrific conduct," Merkley said.
And this Saturday, the day President Trump tweeted Weigel should be fired for his tweet misrepresenting the size of a Florida rally crowd, Booker stumped in Alabama for Democrat Doug Jones, calling for Trump's resignation amid his own sexual harassment scandals from years past, Vice News reported.
"I just watched Sen. Al Franken do the honorable thing and resign from his office," Booker reportedly said. "My question is why isn't Donald Trump doing the same thing — who has more serious allegations against him, with more women who have come forward. The fact pattern on him is far more damning than the fact pattern on Al Franken."
