Democrats will work with President Donald Trump on working on the nation's infrastructure, but the cooperation must go both ways, Rep. Debbie Dingell said Tuesday.
"I've been very clear from the beginning that I will work with Donald Trump on anything that helps the working men and women of my district," the Michigan Democrat told CNN's "New Day" program. "So yes, I'll work with him on infrastructure, if he'll work with us."
That work means cooperation on healthcare, pensions, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals act, among other Democratic agenda items, Dingell said.
"I don't even call them demands," he said. "I call them helping the working men and women in this country."
With DACA, Dingell pointed out that the president agrees that something must be done, and so do most Republicans and Democrats.
Further, she pointed out that she has many men and women in her district who have been paying into pension plans all their lives, and now are "scared to death" that they won't have a safe and secure retirement.
Dingell also added that she does not believe that Trump wants to see 13 million people suddenly lose their access to healthcare coverage.
"I hope that his number one issue is doing something about the promises that he's made," said Dingell, when asked if Democrats will shift to making infrastructure a priority. "We've got to extend the budget and do things about pensions and about DACA and about healthcare promises made to [Sen.] Susan Collins."
Meanwhile, she agreed that the nation's aging infrastructure has needed something done for decades.
"We've got an aging infrastructure with potholes and highways that aren't working and bridges that are in trouble," said Dingell. "We need to do something together to fix our infrastructure if we're going to stay competitive as a nation."
