Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., will vote against President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

Stabenow decided to oppose the pick of the Alabama Republican after meeting with him this week, The Washington Times reported.

"Because of his record on civil rights and his votes against anti-domestic violence legislation, I cannot support him to be our nation's highest law enforcement officer," Stabenow said. "Families in Michigan and across the country deserve an attorney general who will enforce the nation's laws fairly and equally.

Despite opposition from her and other Democrats, Sessions appears set for confirmation in the Senate, the newspaper reported.

Stabenow, who has been critical of Trump, is expected to attend his inauguration, according to WUOM radio in Michigan.

"To me this is about the peaceful transfer of power and as a member of Congress regardless of who the president is, whether I voted for them or not, I attend out of respect for our democratic process," she said.
