New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday said there should be a 70% tax rate on the wealthy as part of a Democratic Party plan that is “strong and bold and progressive.”
At the first of two debates of Democratic candidates for the White House, the progressive second-term mayor boasted that his administration has been addressing income inequality “by raising benefits and putting money back in the hands of the people.”
“This is supposed to be the party of working people,” he said. “Yes, we are supposed to be for 70% tax rate on the wealthy and free college and free public college for our young people. We are supposed to break up big corporations when they are not serving our democracy.
“This Democratic Party has to be strong and bold and progressive,” he continued. “In New York, we have proven that we can do something very different and put money back in the hands of working people.”
He added: “There is plenty of money in this world and this country, it's just in the wrong hands. Democrats have to fix that.”
