President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that "our country needs a good 'shutdown,'" prompting one Democratic congressman to counter with a White House shutdown instead.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., tweeted his response later that morning.

His fellow Democrat, Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, tweeted his disapproval as well.

The Senate's leading Democrat, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, told reporters that "bipartisanship is best summed up by the Rolling Stones: You can't always get what you want," referencing a song Trump often used at campaign rally in response to his tweet, according to CNBC.

In 2014, following the government shutdown the previous year, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., pointed out that "It cost us more to shut the government down than to keep it open."

Moody's Analytics' Mark Zandi estimated the 2013 shutdown cost $20 billion in slowed GDP growth. Standard and Poor's estimated $24 billion.
